GCS Weekly Warmup (032617)Posted March 29, 2017
Hello my singing friends!
Did you know there’s a term for mis-hearing lyrics to a song? A mondegreen /ˈmɒndᵻɡriːn/ is a mishearing or misinterpretation of a phrase as a result of near-homophony, in a way that gives it a new meaning. Mondegreens are most often created by a person listening to a poem or a song; the listener, being unable to clearly hear a lyric, substitutes words that sound similar and make some kind of sense.American writer Sylvia Wright coined the term in 1954, writing about how as a girl she had misheard the lyric “…and laid him on the green” in a Scottish ballad as “…and Lady Mondegreen”
All this time, I thought the lyrics in ‘Africa’ were “There’s nothing that a hundred men from Mars could ever do” Whats your favourite Mondegreen?
What we sang last:
No One Mourns
What we’re singing next:
Make our Garden Grow
Wizard and I
One short day – there are tons of 3 word solos in this one so sing out if you would like to do one.
