Weekly Warmup (V151102)

Posted November 5, 2015

Hi my singing friends!

I hope this finds you well on these alternately beautiful and blustery days. I’m curious: What’s your favourite of this season’s pieces so far? Do you have a preferred piece from past seasons, or just a cherished song? I think it would be fun for us to share our best-loved music through this weekly email.

I have been listening to gorgeous harmonies by such groups as the Good Lovelies ‘Down Down Down’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wEXwVASENQ and the Gardiner Sisters singing ‘Home’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgPSSgP6zzA. As we move indoors and start thinking of seasonal baking, the homey sounds of these folk groups seem, to me, to be especially warm and comforting.

Last week, we sang:

  • Log Driver’s Waltz
  • Fare Thee Well Love
  • Dancing Dancing Rivers

Social Notes
Lorna of the Social Committee says: Thanks to everyone for your enthusiasm about social activities for the coming year! If you have information about upcoming concerts, performances, or other music-related activities to share, please email Lorna at rourke.lorna@gmail.com and we’ll include some of them in the weekly e-letter!

To start us off…

James Rankin is performing at the River Run Centre on Friday November 6. Since we are singing one of his songs this year, you might be interested in going! There are still tickets available at http://riverrun.ca/

Guelph Chamber Choir and the University of Guelph Choir sing Carmina Burana Saturday November 7 at 7:30 pm at River Run. Tickets are available on line. It is a must-hear performance that I know GCSers will enjoy. http://www.guelphchamberchoir.ca/concerts/carmina.html

The Inspiration Concert is coming up on Thurs. Nov 12. Tickets only $15 and all money goes to the Children’s Foundation to support children participating in the arts. It is at the River Run centre and a combination of professional and high school musicians. Tickets available at http://riverrun.ca/

Would anyone like to meet for dinner before choir one night? Several of our singers have mentioned that you’d like to come to the pub after choir but have to get up too early the next day to make it. How about trying a pre-choir dinner at the Woolwich Arms or Baker Street Station? How about Wednesday December 2 at 5:45 p.m. Please email Lorna at rourke.lorna@gmail.com if you’d like to join in.

One of our members shared some information about McDougall Cottage in Cambridge, a historic stone house where musical and cultural events are held. Check out their website: http://mcdougallcottage.com/
